Recent events have caused more and more people looking for property to buy in Marbella to focus on villas with private gardens, and fortunately there is no shortage of options or indeed different natural settings here. In fact, with its warm microclimate right on the Mediterranean Sea, the whole area is a natural garden.

The fact that plants grow well here is easy to spot, as are the landscaping trends that accompany different eras of architecture, starting with the large lawns of earlier properties through to the lush subtropical and even formal gardens of the 90s and early 2000s right up to the more drought-resistant and somewhat smaller green zones of the latest properties. In fact, though modern villas are top of the wish list for most buyers and many have spectacular outdoor areas, you may also want to look at earlier properties as they tend to stand on larger plots and many have quite astounding gardens, complete with ambient courtyards, aromatic herb gardens, play zones for children, tennis and paddle courts, dog runs and even private park areas with sheltered picnic spots and reading corners with inspiring views.

To have these features, or indeed a soothing driveway or pretty pond within your grounds is not common even in Marbella, but depending on your preferences, different areas provide the best options. For expansive private green zones around your property, the top residential areas in Marbella are the gated private country club of La Zagaleta and the country chic gated urbanisation of El Madroñal, both set in the hills just above Marbella. Here, plots are large, with spacious villas surrounded by your own section of countryside, fenced off to keep deer and other ‘locals’ from munching on your lawn.

For spectacular gardens of a more conventional nature, Nueva Andalucía and Sierra Blanca are famous for luxurious villas many of which feature gorgeous flowing or terraced green areas with some of the most elegant and panoramic poolside terraces and covered arbors from which to enjoy a daytime snack or evening meal. They were designed for entertaining, and in many cases also to accommodate a safe environment for the at times robust needs of children, and many offer the private space for all the above.
