The New Golden Mile is an area that roughly runs from Guadalmina on the western edges of Marbella municipality to Estepona. It may have borrowed its name from the original Marbella Golden Mile, but it is a distinct and interesting collection of communities in its own right and has been a popular residential area for many years.
Currently, levels of interest are increasing in its existing properties, plus the new developments that are springing up in its previously less developed parts, and this is a testament to the facilities available here.
Estepona town
Estepona town is charming and has retained a feel of the real Spain. In recent years, the mayor has led a project to revive the town and the beautification of its centre with coloured flowerpots and striking murals that have won acclaim. Estepona also has a number of Blue Flag beaches, such as La Rada, a long, golden beach that is ideal for family fun, and also offers a number of water sports, such as kayaking and windsurfing. El Cristo, which is west of the town, is another clean, well-kept beach with coves that attracts a friendly crowd. The pretty marina nearby is lined with restaurants and the Sunday market is always packed with residents and tourists.
Hotels, golf and beach clubs
Heading east from Estepona, there are a number of attractions including two world-class hotels: the Kempinski Bahía and the Villa Padierna, both of which have luxury spas as well as a selection of upmarket restaurants. Young and old alike love to visit Selwo Aventura, a wildlife safari park, and golfers are well provided for with excellent courses at Los Flamingos, La Resina, El Paraíso, Atalaya and Guadalmina. Laguna Village, with its Puro Beach club and fashion boutiques is another attractive spot that people flock to and it sits on one of the best stretches of beach on this side of the coast. The chiringuito beach bars on the New Golden Mile range from the typically Spanish in Estepona to the high end, such as Salduna in tree-filled Benamara.
Cancelada to Atalaya
Along the New Golden Mile there are a number of new developments that complement the existing ones. Cancelada, for example, is a small village that is home to new developments as well as the popular Costalita urbanisation on its beachside. El Paraíso and Benavista are well-established residential areas that offer a wide range of properties, from mansions and villas to studio apartments. This particular area is filled with restaurants that range from Spanish, Italian and British to Lebanese and Cuban. Atalaya is another area that is going through a strong regeneration thanks to the contemporary residential developments being completed here and the introduction of new bars, supermarket and a yoga centre.
